It’s done, I soldered and assembled my instance of the keyboard we designed and produced with @Kooda and @Reptifur :) Just a little thicker than a Typematrix but with low profile tactile clicky yummy kailh switches !

@Hiro It's beautiful! How does it look from the side ?

@aearil It’s 3 PCBs layered to reduce costs (only one has electronics) so it looks like this! We may 3D-print a case later, also the components will be protected by a transparent acrylic plate when we get the time and motivation to make it!

@Hiro So two of the PCBs are only structural ? Love the concept!

Also, I love those keycaps, remind me of the old HP laptop keyboards. Are they custom made ?

@aearil Yes we planned to use acrylic or aluminum for reinforcement plates but it was way cheaper to use PCBs instead and it does the job really well, it’s pretty rigid. Making casing and structure out of PCB seems to become a quite common method as custom PCB makers in China have become dirt cheap (we ordered them at AllPCB).

We bought the caps in bulk, they are specific to the Kailh Low Profile series (ours are Kailh Low Profile Jade Switches)

@Hiro That's good to know. BTW, I had a look at Kaith's website and they are not showing any prices, what kind of budget are you looking at for those switches and this project in general (if you feel like answering obviously).

Also, I see an ATMega, is that running your own custom code or are you using something premade ?

And for the keycaps, are those the kind you need to engrave with a laser ?

@aearil @Hiro We bought the switches and caps from novelkeys.xyz It was quite expensive since it's from the US and we live in Europe, next time I’ll try to order directly from Kailh by email.
We use our own code on the atmega, which isn’t super great yet. I suppose it would be possible to edit some existing firmware like QMK but we haven’t looked into it yet.
The keycaps that we have can be laser engraved, but we’re leaving them blank. For an example of engraving, look at @mntmn laptop

@Hiro Gorgeous! What is up with the speaker port? Can you connect a buzzer and let it do cool stuff? :D

@Ghosty the micro-controller is pretty versatile and powerful so yeah I’ll probably implement a small standalone 8-bit synthesizer in the firmware :3 also the black rectangle is a 10-pin extension port so they’re lots of possibilities, possibly a LCD or even software VGA or external storage! I’ll also try to see if it can be a password vault too!

@Hiro A password vault would be funny! Or even better: make it a FIDO device :D

How hard do you think would it be to implement some kind of serial protocol which allows the PC to change some configuration of the keeb (e.g. keymap and led stuff)?

I want to change the underglow color of my keeb on the fly without a reflash from my PC but with QMK it isn't possible right now, I believe.

@Ghosty You have crossed the limits of my current knowledge here, sorry! The current firmware is based on a LUFA demo program that was easy enough to modify but I don't understand how the library works yet! I plan to learn, though, as I would really like my keyboard to simultaneously identify as a MIDI device if possible. Also LUFA has a low-level API that seems to be more powerful.

As for the FIDO capability, well can't have password and 2FA in the same device, I'd have to choose!

@Hiro I wish many banks would think so too! All banks I've used so far allow the banking and tan app to be on the same device.
